Results from the worlds largest website traffic survey revealed some startling facts about the effectiveness of different web traffic building techniques are at driving visitors to businesses websites.

Conducted earlier in the year by Intellimon, a website software and training company, in partnership with the University of Bradford, the survey polled over 4000 online businesses. The objective of the research was to better understand the nature of challenges facing businesses marketing themselves on the Internet.

The report, along with proving some popular theories about what "works and what doesn't" uncovered some unexpected trends.

Some of the reports findings include:

  • While 67% of respondents use social media platform Facebook to promote their business, an average of only 29% find the platform effective in any way for driving traffic to their business website.
  • Popular micro-blogging platform Twitter faired equally badly - only 27.2% saying they found it effective for generating website traffic to their business website.
  • The typical age of people doing business online is higher than you might have thought. Of the thousands of respondents, 62% were 50 years of age or older.
An in-depth 120-page analysis of the survey is available for download at http://www.thetrafficsurvey.com.

3 Potent Offline Ways To Help Increase Site Traffic

You already know about putting your signature link on your business card – and sure that might have helped increase site traffic – but there are 3 potent offline methods you may simply have never considered yet.

  1. Using A Local Marketing PR Firm
Many of them are run by skilled single agents – and although good ones won’t dance for a penny, their services may not be as out of reach (or non-cost-effective) as you might think. A local Marketing Consultant has her pulse on all the buzz. She knows every resource, probably has ideas about where to promote you – and all that even before you’ve taken off your coat and ordered your coffee. A basic rule of business is to expend your energy where your money-making skills lie. So you can be focusing on those areas, leaving your Marketing PR consultant free to do what she does best – promote you and drive people to your sites.
  2. Consider Local TV
We’ve all been used to thinking of TV and glossy magazine advertising as something only the Big Leagues can afford – and, in general, that’s certainly true. But did you know that advertising with your local TV station can be surprisingly affordable? As well as building your visibility as a “celebrity” – and even in just your own home town, you’d be surprised how far that goes!

One advantage: Local newspaper editors are much more inclined to print your press releases, if they know you’re been seen on TV (and trust me, they know!) And now there’s been a press release stating that Google will act as an advertising broker between local TV and NBC. According to the terms of the deal, Google advertisers will be able to buy ads on 6 cable networks owned by NBC (including Oxygen, MSNBC, Sci-Fi and CNBC. (This is actually history – it’s the first time Google has ever brokered ads via a television network!)
  3. Offer A Weekend Workshop To Your Community College
Now this may not sound as exciting as your own local TV ad, or as workload-relieving as a simply hiring a Marketing Consultant or local PR firm – but offering a workshop to your Community College is a long term status and traffic increasing strategy every online business person should use!

Draw up a solid proposal, find out who to contact and make your pitch. (After all, you do that online every day, right?) Yes, you’ll put some work into it, and you may not get any immediate clients from your actual class. But I guarantee you’ll learn far more than you teach, and it will open you up to brilliant ideas for your market (providing your workshop subject was actually relevant!) Plus it’s another great opportunity to increase website traffic by sending out press releases – both to offline sources like local newspapers and trade magazines, and to online paid and free PR services (like PRWeb).
That's the thing about a little work: The more you do, and the more enthusiastically you doit, the more you’ll notice the benefits returning to you… So stay positive, stay proactive, make the most of every online and offline opportunity – and watch your credibility and business repuatation grow.

Facebook Marketing - How To Write Facebook Ad Headlines

Drop everything you ever learned about writing long sales copy or blog headlines - Facebook ad headlines are something else, yet again.

For one thing, you only have a rigid 25-characters for your Facebook ad headlines (no exceptions), so they must be short, punchy and eye-catching.

The best format is either something so off-the-wall your reader just has to click, to see what on earth you're talking about... or that old standby, the question format.

Some examples...

  • "Ready to Make Six Figures?"
  • "Which Type are You?"
  • "Want a Virtual Horse?"

The big advantage of the question format is that the "you" is implicit. You're already speaking directly to the reader, just by adding that question mark. (Every time you eliminate the "you" that's 3 whole characters you don't have to include.)

Keep It Simple

Another way is to go for simplicity - and use action verbs such as.

  • Play
  • Avoid
  • Try
  • Fight
  • Love

"Play Farm Wars" - accompanied by your signature branding graphic or a screen shot from the game, and your 125 character body text - does the trick nicely. Your reader will either play (and the chances are the ad's being served to her because she already plays several games)... or not play. Clever keywords and eloquence won't change that.

Condense, Condense, CondenseAnother way to make the most of your headlines?

Eliminate unnecessary words wherever you can. (This will make your writing feel "tighter", anyway.) "Do You Love Chocolate?" can easily be shortened to "Love Chocolate?"

Finally, there's a difference between being enigmatic and being vague.

"Love Chocolate?" - along with an appropriate photo and a brief explanation ("Learn to make your own gourmet truffles!" and a link) - works much better than "Try this" (with no graphic and "For a thrilling experience click here" and a link).

In other words, the latter example didn't pique curiosity, gave not even a hint about the subject... and appealed to no one.

Most inexperienced marketers dash through creating their Facebook headlines, but this is your most important component - the one that makes people either click... or not. Take your time, and really pay attention to the message you want to send.

And don't forget that split-testing!
